FO summons Indian high commissioner, tells India not to drag Pakistan into its elections

Pakistan has summoned India's high commissioner to the Foreign Office, a day after the neighbouring country summoned Pakistan's high commissioner.

During a weekly briefing, Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said that Indian Foreign Secretary summoning Pakistan's high Commissioner on Wednesday night was just a political gimmickry. Faisal further said that India's high commissioner has now also been summoned by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, local media reported.

Foreign Office spokesperson further said that India should confine its general elections to its border and should stop dragging Pakistan to it. India had summoned Pakistan's high commissioner a day after Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has a telephonic conversation with All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday.

During their phone call, the foreign minister was of the view that India should permit a Commission of Inquiry to visit Indian Occupied Kashmir. The APHC leader had appreciated Pakistan's efforts and said that Indian cruelties will never be able to suppress the will of the Kashmiris.

However, India did not appreciate the phone call between the two leaders and  summoned Pakistan's high commissioner to New Delhi last night to lodge a protest.

In a statement issued by the FO, Pakistan rejected the objections raised by India and reiterated that it will maintain its support and solidarity till the time the Kashmir dispute is resolved peacefully. "We [Pakistan] would like to reiterate that Kashmir is an outstanding dispute between India and Pakistan, and acknowledged as such through UN Security Council resolutions as well as numerous Pakistan-India documents including the Simla Agreement and Lahore Declaration," the statement reads.
