KARACHI: As many as 822,126 drivers were challaned for one-way violations, 515,143 for driving motorcycles without safety helmets, 70,569 for driving without license, 32,893 for breaking traffic lights, 19,024 for rash or negligent driving, 8,352 for passengers on roof top, 13,032 for using mobile phones and 1525 challans for emitting excessive smoke by Karachi Traffic police during the year 2018.

The Karachi Traffic Police issued 2,566,516 tickets to the traffic rules violators and recovered an amount of Rs 622.25 million from them during the years 2018, said Karachi Traffic police spokesman Muhammad Idress Bhatti while referring the Traffic Police's performance report of 2018 on Thursday.

The report said that the action against traffic violations has recorded an overall improvement of 6.56 per cent in 2018, as compared to similar action in 2017 as 2408560 drivers were issued tickets for violating traffic rules while Rs 574 million were recovered from them.

The report said that the figures reflect the comittment of Traffic Police to enforce traffic laws on the roads focusing on violations concerning to individuals as well as public transport vehicles.

Besides, several special campaigns were also launched by Traffic Police Karachi in 2018 against serious violation to spread a message of zero-tolerance and adherence to traffic laws.

Regular crackdown against over-speeding vehicles (especially large commercial vehicles), efforts for raising required infrastructure/pedestrian bridges/stop lines/zebra crossing and enhancing traffic sense among populace are the core features of traffic police's strategy to control serious accidents.

The report said that Traffic Police Karachi led by DIG Traffic Javed Ali Meher, in the year 2018 also endeavored to streamline and organize the vehicles plying on roads in a systematic manner.

The inception of bikers lane on Shahrah-e-Faisal is a major initiative in this regard, the report added.
