imageUNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday deplored the dissolution of the main Shia opposition party in Bahrain, warning the ban could fuel tensions in the Gulf kingdom.

A court on Sunday ordered the dissolution of Al-Wefaq despite international criticism of Bahrain's intensified crackdown on dissent.

"The move is the latest in a series of restrictions of the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of association, and freedom of expression in Bahrain," said a statement from Ban's spokesman.

The UN chief said the banning Al-Wefaq along with the crackdown on leading Shia leader and rights activists "risk escalating an already tense situation in the country."

Ban called for an all-inclusive dialogue "in the interest of peace and stability" in Bahrain and in the region.
