MADRID: Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova ended Serena Williams's unbeaten streak at 27 matches by inflicting the American's first defeat of the year 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Madrid Open final on Friday.
Williams had won all five of the previous meetings between the two, but looked out of sorts physically as Kvitova booked her place in the final in the Spanish capital for a second time in her career.
Kvitova will face Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova in Saturday's final after she also pulled off a big upset in beating defending champion Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-4.
