HYDERABAD: On the call of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) a day of mourning was observed here on Saturday as the traders announced day-long closure of their businesses and the transporters kept their vehicles off the roads.
The zonal office of the party organised a Quran Khwani and prayed for the departed soul of MPA Sajid Qureshi and his son who were assassinated in Karachi on Friday.
A 30-year-old man Jamal Mallah, was shot and injured, according to the Hali Road police station.
Police said Mallah was riding over his motorbike when he was stopped by unknown persons and shot in the leg.
He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where the doctors are performing a surgery.
In the violence that ensued the killing of the MPA on Friday, five persons were shot and injured at different locations in Hyderabad, the police said.
The strike, however, was observed in only two of the four tehsils in Hyderabad.
While the life ground to a halt in City and Latifabad tehsils, the Qasimabad and Hyderabad Rural tehsils remained largely unaffected.
Police and rangers were deployed at all the important roads and intersections in the district, while the police and rangers mobiles also patrolled around the city.
