ISLAMABAD: Leader of the House in Senate Jehangir Badar on Wednesday said that the committee on election issues has held 13 meetings to date with the aim of improving and strengthening the electoral framework and process.
Launching the committee's report on Election issues at PIPS, Jahangir Badr said that the committee as per its mandate thoroughly debated, discussed and held marathon sessions with all stakeholders to get input on electoral reforms and to further push the agenda for transparent elections.
He said that it was also decided that the Committee will reach to all the stakeholders to solicit their opinions and recommendations, so that its work could be productive and result oriented.
He said that committee held public hearing on October 17, 2012 inviting National and International Civil Society Organization, lawyers forums, political parties, media persons and Representatives from Commerce & Industry to present their proposals at electoral reforms.
He said that this was first ever public hearing on electoral issues by any Committee in the history of Pakistan Parliament. They invited political parties included those who are not even represented in current Parliament and a full house Committee deliberated upon the inputs. Following public hearing, the Committee held meetings with all the stakeholders involved, he added.
Discussions on lot of key issues including voters registration and the maintenance and correction of the electoral roll, electronic voting, overseas voting and Code of Conduct for political parties issued by the ECP, Jahangir Badr said.
He said that the scope of the Committee has been extended to empower it to oversight the day to day issues pertaining to general elections.
