qadriRAWALPINDI: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leader Dr. Tahirul Qadri on Sunday announced that his party would not take part in the upcoming general elections.

Addressing a public gathering at Liaquat Bagh here, Dr. Qadri said, "We will run a campaign against the current political system. We will not become a part of this system as it is not working and delivering."

He alleged that the government that was to be formed after the next elections would be neither transparent nor stable.

He was of the view that necessary election reforms were required to be introduced by the Election Commission which however could not take place.

Dr Tahirul Qadri urged the people to elect competent people if they wanted to do something for themselves.

Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri claimed that the electoral reforms promised to him were not fulfilled, so he was not willing to become a part of the current political system.

Tahirul Qadri said he was an elected member of parliament in 2002 and resigned in 2004, adding nothing was being done in the National Assembly for the welfare of the masses.

Therefore, he launched the campaign for the change and awareness of people.

Dr Qadri said he was not disappointed with the future of Pakistan, and if given a chance, he would pay back what is direly needed by the country and the nation.

He said, if corruption was completely eliminated from the country then all the country's debts could have been returned.

Announcing his future line of action he said that PAT would stage peaceful sit-ins across the country on the day of the polling, to ensure that a workable system which delivers in accordance with the national interests was in place.

The PAT Chief also called for the election of the Prime Minister through popular vote, instead of the National Assembly. At the same time he demanded that chief ministers and their cabinets be dissolved and powers transferred at the local level.

Dr Qadri said his campaign for revolution would continue till a real change took place in the country.

Foolproof security arrangements were made for the public meeting by the district government. As many as 4000 policemen were deployed for the security of the public meeting and to avoid any untoward incident.

City Traffic Police under its traffic plan also barricaded all the roads in the surroundings of Liaquat Bagh, the venue of the public meeting. Vehicular Traffic at Murree Road was diverted to other roads.

Walk through gates were also installed at the entry points.
