imageEmma Stone won the Oscar for best actress on Sunday for the whimsical musical 'La La Land', the most honored film of the night. The 28-year-old won her first Oscar in a field that included former winners Meryl Streep and Natalie Portman, as well as Ruth Negga.

Nostalgic musical La La Land leads the charge for golden statuettes with 14 nominations at the start of the night, and is the clear frontrunner for the prestigious best picture award. The film, which stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as an aspiring actress and a struggling jazz musician who fall in love in Los Angeles, has charmed critics the world over and returned more than 10 times its $30 million budget.

Stone's closest rival in this category was probably French actress Isabelle Huppert, who won the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Actress for her performance as a rape victim in Elle.

While accepting the prestigious award from Leonardo Dicaprio, Stone said, "To the women in this category, Natalie, Isabelle, Meryl, Ruth: You are all so extraordinary. I look up to you and I admire you more than I can put into words. It has been the greatest honor to stand alongside you that is the greatest honor of all".

The star continued to thank her family and colleagues, including director Damian Chazelle and ofcourse her co-actor Ryan Gosling, "Thank you for making me laugh and for always raising the bar and for being the greatest partner on this crazy adventure," she said.
