imageLaylat Al-Qadr was the night when the ‘Quran’ was revealed to Muhammad (S.A.W) from Allah. Revelation of the Quran occurred in two phases, with the first phase being the revelation in its entirety to the Angel Jibril (A.S) in the lowest heaven, and then the subsequent verse-by-verse revelation to Muhammad (S.A.W) by Jibril (A.S), across 23 years.

So valuable is this Night of ‘Qadr’ that the Quran devotes a special Surah to it:

Undoubtedly, We sent it down in the blessed and valuable night. And what you know, what the blessed night is? The blessed and valuable Night is better than a thousand months. Therein descend angels and Jibril (the Spirit) by the command of their Lord for every affair. That is all peace till the rising of the dawn. [Al Quraan: Surah Al-Qadr (97)]

There’s the belief that Laylat Al-Qadr comes once in a year, most possibly during Ramadan, and most probably during the last ten nights of the month on one of the odd numbered nights and most likely on the night of 27th Ramadan.

It’s mentioned in Sahih Muslim, Vol No. 2, in the Book of Fasting, that the Prophet said that, “On the night of Lailatul Qadr, the moon will appear like a plate towards the fag end of the month.”

It’s further mentioned in Sahi Muslim and Bukhari that, Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylat al-Qadr while nourishing his faith with self-evaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven.”

One can gain 83 years of worship reward and forgiveness for an entire lifetime of sins by praying on this one special night. As we enter into the last ten days and nights of Ramazan, we have to roll up our sleeves in order to double our ibadat especially during the nights.
