KARACHI: The heavy monsoon rains have played havoc in entire Sindh, especially in Jacobabad, adjoining districts Shikarpur, Kashmore-Kandhkot and other districts where the rain, which continues since last 24 hours, has broken hundred-year record inundating the towns and fields damaging houses, collapsing electric poles, destroying crops and causing loss of human life.
According to Meteorological Department, 305mm rain was recorded at Jacobabad at 8.00a.m on Monday. The rainfall recorded at Sukkur was 164mm, Rohri 152mm, Larkana 58mm, Badin 50mm, Diplo 50mm, Chhor 35mm, Mithi 16mm, Padidan 5mm, Karachi 7mm, Hyderabad 3mm and Nawabshah 1mm.
The rain still continues.
In Kashmore-Kandhkot district over a dozen people have died and hundreds of houses have collapsed during rain lashing the area since yesterday.
PPI correspondent from Kandhkot reported that a woman Ms. Aqilan, 2-year boy Nasir Hussain and 5-year Abdul Rasheed died as their house collapsed in village Balach. Similarly 12 persons reportedly died in such incidents in Tangwani, Risaldar, Bakhshapur and Kashmore.
A large number of people have sustained injuries. The rain has destroyed rice crop and disrupted electricity supply. Deputy Commissioner Munawar Mithani has declared emergency in the district and Rangers, Police and other rescue agencies were evacuating marooned people.
Pakistan Army has been called in Shikarpur as emergency has been declared in the city after the rains flooded the historic town. Deputy Commissioner Shikarpur said that rooftops of over 150 houses collapsed making a disaster-like situation. He said that as many as three people were killed and over 40 others injured in the rain-related incidents in the city.
The people are praying in mosques for halt to the rains that have submerged several roads of the city including railway station, Ghanta Ghar and Jumani Hall under five-foot water. Citizens are forced to stay at home.
The road link to Khairpur district of Sindh is also shut due to flooding in drains and watercourses submerging the vegetable fields. Many districts in Sindh are also facing difficulties in obtaining food and clean drinking water. In Khairpur‚ low lying areas have been inundated due to heavy rain. In Sukkur also rainwater entered the houses and shops.
In lower Sindh, Thatta and Badin districts are affected by heavy rains. Deputy Commissioner Thatta has warned the people living along coastal belt of district to remain high alert in view of heavy rains.
Emergency has also been declared.
