KARACHI: The UAE Red Crescent Monday launched a project worth $5.5 million for helping at least 1100 widows and children of special needs who were hard hit by the flash-flood in Badin district of the Sindh province last year.

A delegation of UAE Red Crescent headed by Ahmed Humaid Al Mazroui, Chairman of Board of Directors handed over animals like cows to the affected families in order to enable them find a sustainable source of income and help them start a new life instead of depending upon immediate relief.

The ceremony was attended by speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Fahmeeda Mirza and UAE ambassador to Islamabad Essa Abdullah Al Basha Al Noaimi. Speaking on the occasion NA Speaker said that last year's flood was the worst in country's history which affected some 20 million people and the province of Sindh was the worst affected area.

It destroyed about 22 percent of agricultural land which had a great impact on development projects in the province as it caused significant damage.

She said that Pakistan valued the humanitarian initiatives by the UAE which always stood by its people in time of natural disasters and provided all possible assistance which enabled it to overcome the difficulties resulting from these events.

She aid these projects reflected UAE commitment to the humanitarian issues in Pakistan.

It was a fundamental initiative of the UAE Red Crescent which had not spared any effort in helping the affected people. It provided humanitarian assistance to the affected areas and the people of these areas were thankful to the UAE.

In his remarks on the occasion Ahmed Humaid Al Mazroui assured that the project was one of the leading initiatives which were carried out by the UAE Red Crescent for the sake of natural disasters-hit people in Pakistan under the instructions of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, with the support by Sheikh Muhammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi and deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces and constant follow up of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Ruler's Representative in Western Area and Chairman of UAE Red Crescent.

He said that the project was helping thousands of families in the Sindh province that suffered from the devastated floods last year and destroyed many places including farm sector and livestock.

Al Mazroui highlighted the aim of this humanitarian project and its economical and social impact. He emphasized that it will play a significant role in the economical and social stability of the affected families and it will enhance its capabilities to overcome the crisis and open a new hope to live once again.

He said that such fundamental projects are included in the priority list of the UAE Red Crescent, its plans and strategies in the hope of providing the assistant for local people and the ability to regain their activities and works and means of livelihood especially in agriculture sector and livestock which were lost due to disasters.

He explained that the humanitarian activities are based on these foundations which aim to provide development projects that could lead to the betterment of families. It could also guarantee the future of the weak categories in the society and might decrease the unemployment ratio among the locals especially the youth.

He said UAE response to the floods affected people was its humanitarian duty towards the Pakistani brethren who have strong bonds with the UAE nation.

It is also in response to the moral duty towards the victims of natural disasters and crisis. He elaborated that the UAE Red Crescent's projects were having explicit impact in improving the condition of the floods affected people.

On this occasion also,Issa Abdullah Al Basha Al Noaimi said the leadership of UAE adopted an excellent approach to help natural disasters affected people through the provision of relief assistance without any discrimination of sex, race or sect.

UAE attaches great importance to Pakistan and its nation and always works to alleviate the suffering of Pakistani people and reduce the impact of natural disasters on them.

He said that the UAE has implemented about 280 development projects in various fields during the past years in Pakistan which reflected its commitment to the humanitarian issues.

He said that the humanitarian assistance to the people of Pakistan reflected deep and strong ties between two brotherly countries and added: we will spare no effort in promoting this special relationship through the implementation of more projects for the benefit of the people of Pakistan".

The Red Crescent on Friday along with the UAE envy to Islamabad also inaugurated the Sheikh Khalifa city in Balakot Khaybar Pakhtunkhwa which consists of 211 houses, a clinic, a mosque and a school.

A number of other projects including 37 mosques and 20 tube wells have been inaugurated in Rawalpindi, Muzaffarabad , Mardan , Balakot , Islamabad , Wazirstan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
