GUATEMALA CITY: Unidentified assailants shot dead the mayor of a Guatemalan town Thursday as he left home, a spokesman for an association that represents the country's municipalities said.
Rene Lopez, who was elected mayor of the southern town of San Gabriel last year, was shot three times in the head, his wife told the association.
A wave of violence fueled by drug trafficking and armed gangs has made Guatemala one of the most violent countries in Latin American with 16 murders a day, according to police figures.
