imageISLAMABAD: The agricultural scientists engaged in Fruit and Vegetable Programme at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) has developed profitable technologies for off-season vegetables and urged growers to use them for their own and public benefits.

According to Pakistan Agricultural Research Council sources, a team of research scientists who extensively conducted experiments at farmers' fields for production of cucumbers and tomatoes crop throughout the country in collaboration with provincial agricultural research institutions have termed off-season vegetables production highly profitable for the growers.

" A farmer can earn Rs 1,20,000 net profit out of one acre piece of land, if the farmers follow the complete production technology," the sources said.

The technology has been adopted by the farmers who were involved during experimental work but other farmers need to adopt. Therefore, farmers can had technologies to get benefit of the research made so far by the agricultural scientists of PARC/NARC.

There is a great demand of vegetables all the year round and the price is high at the start of the season and at the end of the season. If modern techniques are applied to grow off-season vegetables then farmers can earn good profit, the sources said.

The production of vegetables all around the year enables the growers to fully utilize their resources and supplement income from vegetable growing as compared to other normal agricultural crops.

After successful demonstration of technologies at farm level, the experts formulated training extension agents who then organised farmers' meetings at village level to educate the vegetable growers.

In this connection leaflets showing information for production of these off-season vegetable crops were prepared, published and distributed amongst farmers and other stakeholders, the sources stated.
