‘Game of Thrones’ creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss quit ‘Star Wars’ movies

  • David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have walked out from 'Star Wars' feature film trilogy.
  • They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but their schedule is full up.

‘Game of Thrones’ creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have exited their planned ‘Star Wars’ movie series to focus on their Netflix project.

Benioff and Weiss were heavily criticized for the final six episodes of 'Game of Thrones' [and the finale was the worst-rated episode in the GOT history]. They reportedly wrapped up GOT series to work on 'Star Wars' film, so the their exit news came as a shocker for many of his fans.

Benioff and Weiss’ deal with Disney Lucasfilm was highly publicised when announced in February 2018. Under the agreement the pair was to write and produce the new ‘Star Wars’ films. But now, they have announced their decision to pull out of ‘Star Wars’ films.

In August, they chose to write, produce and direct for Netflix, in what is estimated to be a US$200m deal. The duo particularly wants to focus on that project now.

“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too," Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. “Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”

The news comes a month after The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige was developing a ‘Star Wars’ film, a move that drew speculation that perhaps this could be a testing ground for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have a bigger role in a galaxy.
