Swansea City have appointed England's World Cup winning under-17 coach Steve Cooper as their new head coach on a three-year deal, the Championship side said on Thursday.

Cooper, 39, will take up his first senior role in management and replaces Graham Potter who left the second-tier club to join Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion as manager last month.

"At the forefront of our thinking was the appointment of a head coach who was hungry, ambitious, had a clear track record of playing our style of football," Swansea chairman Trevor Birch said in a statement.

"Plus a pedigree to work with and develop young, talented players... Steve matched all those requirements in abundance and his views, coaching ethos and presentation were compelling."

Cooper led England's under-17 team to the final of the 2017 European Championship, where they lost to Spain on penalties, before they beat the same opponents later that year in the World Cup final.

His title-winning squad included the likes of Manchester City's Phil Foden, Liverpool's Rhian Brewster, Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho.
