Review: Live-action adaptation of 'Aladdin' ruins the old classic

The live-action adaptation of 1992’s Aladdin has hit just theatres in most part of the world, and as per the early reviews the movie is a total disappointment.

Few major setbacks reported in the new ‘Aladdin’ are, the original was a satisfying 90 minutes long, but the remake clocks in around two hours. The extra padding comes from the strange supplementary plotlines, like the addition of Nasim Pedrad as Jasmine’s handmaiden, who falls in love with Genie, or the inclusion of a new song, ‘Speechless’ that Jasmine sings twice.

The best thing this remake does is make you want to watch the original. The worst thing it does is make you miss Robin Williams terribly. Will Smith- the Genie, the centerpiece visual effect, and a character brilliantly inhabited by Williams in the 1992 version is the biggest disappointment of all.

The rest of the film also revolves around, over-acted Aladdin stumbling through a clunky script and worse production. Having seen the animated films, movie goers can safely say the 1992 cartoon version is the only one we ever needed.

Though the movie has officially released worldwide, but it will see light in Pakistan this Eid.
