Egypt, the world's largest wheat importer, has bought 55,000 tonnes of US soft red winter wheat for April 1-10 shipment on a free on board basis, the main government wheat buyer said on Saturday. Nomani, vice chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), gave the following breakdown of the purchases - 55,000 tonnes of US soft red winter wheat from Venus at $262 per tonne with freight costs of $27 per tonne.
GASC last purchased US wheat in June. Nomani said that prices of the US-origin wheat offered in the tender were competitively priced against other offers. "This shows that the US wheat will have bigger chances in future Egyptian purchases as well as the French wheat," he added. Since the start of the 2011/12 fiscal year on July 1, GASC's purchases have been dominated by Black Sea origin wheat.
