DUBAI: Saudi Arabia's main state grain buyer SAGO said on Thursday it was seeking to purchase 595,000 tonnes of hard wheat from global suppliers in an international tender.
The deadline for submitting offers was 2359 Saudi time (2059 GMT) on Oct. 14, with the wheat due to be shipped between Dec. 1, 2016 and Jan. 30, 2017, it said.
The 595,000 tonnes comprise nine individual consignments of 60,000 tonnes and one cargo of 55,000 tonnes, SAGO Governor Ahmed Al-Fares said in a statement.
The shipments are distributed to the ports of Jeddah (360,000 tonnes), Dammam (180,000 tonnes) and Jazan (55,000 tonnes).
The purchase would comprise 475,00 tonnes delivered under the terms of cost & freight free out (CFR-FO) which includes ocean shipping costs to the specified Saudi Arabian Sea port and a further 120,000 tonnes loaded under free on board (FOB) from a nominated sea port which does not include ocean shipping, Al-Fares said.
In its last reported tender on Aug. 15, SAGO purchased 640,000 tonnes of hard wheat.
Saudi Arabia has become a major importer of hard and soft wheat since abandoning plans for self sufficiency in 2008 because farming in the desert drained scarce water supplies.
It halted purchases of locally grown wheat this year.
