imageMEXICO CITY: Mexican authorities have detained a former governor's son on charges of withholding evidence after he refused to testify over a video showing him sharing a beer with a drug lord.

Rodrigo Vallejo, whose father Fausto Vallejo stepped down as governor of the troubled western state of Michoacan for health reasons in June, was ordered held over the weekend.

The federal judicial council said Monday that authorities refused to release him on bail and that his lawyers had 144 hours to present evidence in his favor while he remains in prison outside Mexico City.

Before appearing in front of federal prosecutors on Friday, Vallejo had written on his Facebook page that he had been forced to meet with Knights Templar boss Servando "La Tuta" Gomez.

In the video posted online by Quadratin news agency of Michoacan, Vallejo is seen and heard speaking with Gomez, smiling at times and with a beer in hand as they sit around an outdoor table.

Fausto Vallejo's former number two, Jesus Reyna, who served as interim governor for six months last year, is being held pending trial for alleged ties to organized crime after he was seen in a separate video with Gomez.
