The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Wednesday extended interim pre-arrest bail of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Memon till February 11 in the Roshan Sindh Program case.

A division bench of IHC comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Lubna Salim Pervez heard the petition of the PPP leader.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice asked from the official of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding the date when inquiry was launched into the Roshan Sindh program. To this, the NAB official replied that the anti-corruption watchdog launched the inquiry on February 4, 2019.

Justice Athar remarked why this inquiry has not reached conclusion. He further asked whether the NAB wants to kill or torture Sharjeel Memon. The NAB officer replied that the institution wants to fulfill legal requirements in the case.

The IHC bench said that basic rights cannot be taken away by arresting Memon as he is not running away and the institution should take the decision in view of the NAB Ordinance. The case was adjourned until February 11.

Memon filed the petition through his counsel Latif Khosa while Deputy Prosecutor General Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi is presenting the NAB in this matter.

Memon filed another application for submission of additional documents in this matter while his counsel Khosa contended before the court that NAB could not conduct investigations against his client.

During the previous hearing, Memon's lawyer requested the court that his client is cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials in connection with the inquiry and the institution should be stopped from arresting him.
