Nestle Pakistan in collaboration with the WWF-Pakistan is implementing water stewardship programme to ensure that water is managed sustainably and judiciously at its Sheikhupura plant as a shared public resource. "We started implementation of AWS in 2016 and succeeded to bring down the water usage by 4 percent per annum. We are further working to meet the international water management standard which aims to drive best water management practices within industrial operations," said Muaaz, a representative of the Nestle Sheikhupura plant while talking to a delegation of Agricultural Journalists Association (AJA) headed by its President Muhammad Sudhir Chaudhry.
The delegation visited the plant to see the good practices introduced by Nestle administration to promote better management of site-specific water use. WWF-Pakistan is facilitating the implementation of AWS standards in Pakistan. AWS is designed to achieve four water stewardship, outcomes good water governance, sustainable water balance, good water quality status and healthy status of important water related areas.
Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world with fewer than 1,000 cubic meters of water available per person. The biggest contributor to this stress is the irresponsible water use by farmers. Agriculture currently accounts for 96% of the water use while the rest is equally distributed between domestic and industrial use, according to a 2007 study by Asian Development Bank.
