Larkana: Larkana's largest two-day science festival for schoolchildren kicked off on Wednesday at Larkana Arts Council, to ignite a spark for science and discovery among students in the region, and to promote better quality of learning available in government schools.
The festival was organized and inaugurated by District Commissioner, Larkana, Kashif Ali Tipu and Mayor of Larkana Muhammad Aslam Shaikh, in collaboration with Sindh Education Alliance and Pakistan Alliance for Maths and Science. The Larkana Science Festival is the largest science festival for children in Pakistan outside of those organized in Karachi and Lahore.
The first day of the festival attracted a massive attendance of 6,000 students from more than 200 government and private schools of Larkana division. Teachers, entrepreneurs, science specialists, government officials and local political leaders attended the festival where students exhibited more than 120 science models displaying their passion for science and technology, and introduced innovative concepts to the visitors.
Interactive displays and live experiments, some of which involved lunar and solar observatories, robotics, and 3D printing, were conducted by six science organisations from across Pakistan: Stemmers, Robotech, Pakistan Science Club, Pakistan Astronomy Society and Numerica. Local maths and science organisations will also be showing their exhibits in an effort to explain how to bridge the gap between practical studies and curriculum in schools.
Maths and science education is critical in developing the cognitive skills in children. It is also necessary to ensure that the quality of learning becomes a critical informant of how decisions of funding, recruitment, measurement, rewards and punishment are made by the public sector. Nations have used maths and science to empower their citizens with higher incomes, and to help grow their economies.
During his media talk, District Commissioner Kashif Ali Tipu invited all children in Larkana to attend the festival with their parents and termed the event a learning opportunity for Larkana's youth. -PR
