Private sector and philanthropists have, in first phase, donated generously 40 modern water filter plants for exclusive installation in the Punjab jails to ensure provision of hygienic drinking water to all 52,019 prisoners confined across the province.
Total requirement was approximately 100 plants for 32 jails of which 40 had already been managed through donation by various organisations, said Punjab Prisons' Chief Mian Farooq Nazeer while talking to APP here on Sunday.
IG said that due to financial constraints, the co-operation of philanthropists and public sector organisations was being sought for donation of water filter plants. He said that a plant with 750 gallon per hour capacity had been installed at camp jail, here under pilot project, adding after its successful functioning another would be installed in the jail to meet the pure drinking water requirement of nearly 4,500 prisoners.
