DOHA: Saudi Arabia's Midyan gas field project in the Red Sea is expected to produce 75 million cubic feet of gas per day, Saudi Aramco's chief executive said, production that would help supply the growing domestic market.
The world's top oil exporter is trying to boost its gas production quickly enough to meet rapidly rising domestic power demand and feed its booming petrochemical industry.
"The field development of Midyan is going ahead steadily as planned in all respects," Khalid al-Falih said in a statement posted on the state-run energy giant's website on Monday.
Gas from Midyan will be pumped to the province of Duba to feed new power stations planned by the Saudi Electricity Company and Aramco, al-Falih said.
Saudi oil minister Ali Naimi has said the field development, which began earlier this year, would be done quickly. Falih did not say when production was expected to begin.
His daily output estimate is the equivalent of 2.12 million cubic metres.
Midyan, which is also expected to produce around 4,500 barrels a day of condensate, a light oil, was discovered in the 1980s.
