imageBad news for sugar lovers, as too much sugar is not just bad for your teeth, it is worse for the brain, revealed a latest study.

According to Telegraph, researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) have found that fructose, which is a type of sugar found naturally in fruits and vegetables, and is also present in soft drinks and sweets, damages brain cells leading to a number of diseases, from diabetes, heart disease to Alzheimer's and ADH.

During an experiment, scientists fed a group of rats for one and half month, with fructose-rich water i.e. similar to a litre of soft drinks a day for humans. Then they put them in a maze, alongside rats which had drank only regular water. The rats which consumed fructose water took twice as long to navigate the maze then the water-only group, despite same level of training, which means that their memories were impaired.

The above statement might seems depressing for the ones with a sweet tooth. However, as per UCLA, researchers there is also a good news i.e. An omega-3 fatty acid known as docosahexaenoic acid, or simply DHa, helps to reverse these harmful changes produced by fructose.

A third group of rats which were with DHa rich solution as well as the fructose water were able to navigate through the maze almost as quickly as the water-only group.

“DHa changes not just one or two genes; it seems to push the entire gene pattern back to normal, which is remarkable,” said Xia Yang, a senior author of the study..

Now, from where would you get this DHa? It is found naturally in fish-especially salmon, nuts, and certain vegetables.

So, reduce your sugar consumption and switch to DHa rich diet to boost up your brain.
