For the first time in 63 years, the pageant will no longer feature a swimsuit round in their competition from next year, the organization’s chairwoman Julia Morley announced Thursday.
The contest committee has taken this step to emphasis more on brains and personality rather than physical beauty. It’s not just a beauty contest but also ‘beauty with purpose’, and sporting swimsuit doesn’t do anything for that.
According to foreign media reports Morley said, “I really don’t need to see women just walking up and down in bikinis. It doesn’t do anything for the woman and it doesn’t do anything for any of us. I don’t care if someone has a bottom two inches bigger than someone else’s. We are really not looking at her bottom. We are really listening to her speak”.
Miss World was founded in 1951 by Morley's late husband Eric and from then on, there has been a contest dedicated exclusively to swimwear. But recently, she has come to feel that the swimsuit round is unnecessary.
Chris Wilmer, the national director of Miss World America/Miss United States organization said, “The organization has decided to take itself out of the swimsuit world because it isn’t the path they’re trying to take. It’ll be more of a fashion competition than a bikini show,” media reported.
Recently, Miss South Africa, 22-year-old Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest’s glitzy final on December 14, 2014.
