MULTAN: Commuters and employees of the Railways Multan division heaved a sigh of relief here on Wednesday after Mepco restored power supply to cantonment railway station and railways quarters some nine days after the disconnection when administration paid Rs 9 million electricity bill.
Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) authorities had disconnected power supply to cantonment railway station and quarters of railway colony after the Railways failed to pay electricity bills worth over Rs 20 million.
The power supply was restored last Tuesday after Railways Multan administration partly paid the electricity bills, officials of railways of Multan told APP on Wednesday.
Railway administration had to shift to generators to power the computerized ticket booking system while signals system was operated manually to regulate train operations during the nine days.
Meanwhile, railways employees demanded that separate meters should be installed at their quarters so that they can make payment against the electricity bills issued to them. Life became unbearable for them during last nine days when there was no electricity supply to their homes, they complained.
There was no supply of water to many quarters and employees had to go to other places.
Railways union have also urged the railways Multan administration to ensure that separate electricity bills be issued to them instead of making deductions from their monthly salaries.
