  • The CPPA requested a hike in electricity prices by 98 paisas per unit in the garb of monthly fuel adjustment for the month of November.
  • Chairman NEPRA said that the power regulator would protect the rights of consumers.

The hike in electricity rates have been delayed, after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has withdrawn the request for increase in rates on Tuesday.

Chairman National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) chaired the hearing on the request of CPPA. The Central Power Purchasing Agency requested a hike in electricity prices by 98 paisas per unit in the garb of monthly fuel adjustment for the month of November. However, during the hearing, the CPPA requested NEPRA to delay the increase for the monthly fuel adjustment.

As per officials, CPPA seeks to make changes in the fuel price adjustment mechanism. The CPPA informed that despite issues in power sector, it is not true that CPPA has financial difficulties.

Chairman NEPRA said that the power regulator would protect the rights of consumers.

According to the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), 39.01 percent of electricity was generated from hydropower in the month of November, 27.31 percent from coal, 9.34pc from local gas, 9.20pc from imported LNG and 11.55pc from nuclear sources.

The CPPA informed that 7.2 billion units of electricity was generated in November, which was generated at the cost of Rs25 billion. Meanwhile, nine paisas per unit was observed in power transmission loss, whereas, Rs10.05 per unit of electricity was generated from imported gas.

It should be noted that NEPRA, on the request of CPPA, had approved an increase of Rs. 1.56 per unit in the power tariff on December 26, as part of the cost adjustment of consumption in October.
