The United Nations has honored seven Pakistani soldiers who lost their lives while serving in the global body's peacekeeping operations during the year 2017.
At a solemn ceremony marking the annual International Day of Peacekeepers, the UN awarded the Day Hammarskjöld Medal posthumously to the peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives for the cause of peace, during the preceding year.
Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi, accepted the awards on behalf of the families of the seven fallen Pakistani peacekeepers namely Sepoy Hazrat Bilal, Naik Abdul Ghafoor, Naik Muhammad Ali, Sepoy Muhammad Ishtiaq Abbasi, Sepoy Tariq Javed, Naik Attaur Rehman and Sepoy Yasir Abbas.
As of February 2018, Pakistan is the fifth largest contributor of uniformed personnel to United Nations peacekeeping, with more than 6,000 men and women serving under the UN flag. Meanwhile, Chief of Army staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said Pakistan is a peace loving country and will continue to contribute to global peace efforts.
