An accountability court on Monday sent former Director General Lahore Development Authority Ahad Khan Cheema to jail on judicial remand for his alleged involvement in Ashiana-i-Iqbal Housing Scheme scam.
Earlier, a NAB prosecutor seeking further remand of Cheema told the court that 90-day physical remand of the suspect had been completed however during the investigation allegations of assets beyond known sources of income had been surfaced.
He pointed out that important information had been retrieved from the personal laptop of Cheema and a transaction of 200,000 US dollars had also been traced from the bank account of Cheema's brother.
He said further that custody of the suspects was required to investigate the allegations of illegal assets and demanded another 14-day physical remand of Cheema.
On the other side, the counsel of Cheema opposed the prosecutor's request as the Bureau was asking for a separate remand in the same case.
He said the law did not allow separate remand in same inquiry while the NAB had exhausted the maximum the limit of 90 days.
Presiding judge, Najamul Hassan, turned down the Bureau's request and sent Cheema to jail on judicial remand.
The court also sent co-suspect Shahid Shafiq of Bismillah Engineering Services Company on judicial remand. Cheema was arrested by the NAB on February 21 last on charges of misusing his authority with criminal intent and awarding contracts of the Ashiana-e-Iqbal housing scheme in violation of rules. The NAB alleged that Bismillah Engineering of Shahid Shafiq was a proxy firm working on behalf of Paragon City Developers (Pvt) Ltd.
