Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is facing scarcity of funds to the tune of around Rs 300 million, creating problems for the civic utility to ensure timely payments to staff and pensioners. This was stated by KMC's Welfare Department officials while briefing the Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar on Wednesday. The officials said the amount of salary and OZT grant that KMC receives from the Sindh government is insufficient to pay staff salaries and pensions. KMC was utilizing its own resources to fill the gap of around Rs 30 million to ensure payments.
They said the civic body would require additional Rs 80 million for December, 2017 under the head of annual increment to the staff salaries. Parliamentary leader in City Council Aslam Afredi, Municipal Commissioner Dr Asghar Abbas, Director Coordination Muhammad Imran and Director Warfare Jabbar Bhatti were present during the briefing.
Mayor on this occasion said that timely disbursement of pensions and other liabilities to the retired KMC employees is the top priority of the civic body.
He said around Rs 20 million had been paid to the Christian employees of KMC prior to the Christmas.
The Mayor instructed Welfare Department officials to formulate a mechanism with making a seniority list of employees so that the outstanding dues would be paid among them. "Due to lack of monetary resources available with KMC, we could not pay pensions among the employees on time; however efforts are now being made to resolve the issue," the Mayor said.
