Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Wednesday submitted privilege and adjournment motions under rule 109 of Rules of Business against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the National Assembly Secretariat. Both the motions having signatures of 20 PTI leaders, including Imran Khan, Murad Saeed, Ameerullah Marwat, were presented by Shireen Mazari, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Munaza Hassan and Arif Alvi.
According to both motions, "This is the issue of the Prime Minister's lying on the floor of the House on May 16 while speaking on the Panama Leaks issue in the National Assembly." The Prime Minister stated on the floor of the house that the flats in London were purchased from the proceeds of the sale of Gulf Steel Mill in Dubai. However, according to the papers submitted by the PM's lawyer with the Supreme Court on his behalf, Gulf Steel was totally bankrupt.
The Prime Minister stated on the floor of the house that he had all the documents to prove his case but his lawyer stated in the Supreme Court that there were no documents to prove anything as there was no record kept at that time, since business was conducted on "parchis" (chits). The Prime Minister made no mention of any Qatari link to the London flats owned by his children but then in the Supreme Court the Qatari Prince's letter suddenly appeared.
The Prime Minister's lawyer, in the Supreme Court, stated that the PM's speech on the floor of the House was merely a political speech thereby implying it was economical on the truth and should not be taken seriously. This complete trivializes the Parliament since it suggests the statements made by the PM on the floor of the house should not be taken seriously. As such it is no less than contempt of the Parliament. "We request suspension of the normal business of the House till a briefing and discussion are held on this issue of Parliament itself being undermined by the PM on so many levels." Given the seriousness of the issue, this matter should be taken up immediately by the house, the motions said.
