Petitioner seeks new population census

An application filed in the Supreme Court Wednesday urged the apex court to order federal government to carry out an immediate population census. Former parliamentarian Marvi Memon filed the application, urging the court to take suo motu notice, saying every country was required to conduct census after a decade under the United Nations conventions and the last census in the country was conducted in 1998.
"In the absence of an updated census it is impossible to effectively run the affairs of the federal and provincial governments - As such I urge the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice and direct the federal government to immediately conduct a population census," Memon pleaded.
