Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday received nomination papers from 20 candidates to contest Senate election. The ECP received four nomination papers against general seats and 16 to contest on Fata seats. Those who submitted their documents to contest on general seats included Dr Mazar Hussain Mirza, Mohammad Umer Mughal and Usman Saifullah.
Those who filed paper for Fata seats included Hamid-Ullah Khan Afridi, Dr Auranzaib Khan, Balal ur Rehman, Malik Abdul Rehman, Abdul Waheed Khan, Mohammad Saleh Shah and Sabzada Abdul Salam. The ECP received nomination papers for Senate elections for Fata and the four provinces on last date (Tuesday). A total of 50 senators are retiring in March after completing their respective terms. The elections are to be held on 54 seats, including 11 from each province, four from Fata and two from the federal capital, while four minority members (one from each province) will also be elected for the first time.
According to the notification to elect senators issued by the ECP, the returning officer continued receiving nomination papers in provincial election commissions and central election commission offices until Tuesday. The scrutiny of nomination papers would be carried out on Thursday and Friday. Appeals regarding objections would be disposed of on February 22 and 23. The final list of the candidates would be announced on February 24.
