The rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab in Kasur, Punjab has sent shockwaves across Pakistan and caused widespread outrage, as protests continued on the second day across the country.

The minor girl was raped and murdered after being abducted six days ago. Her body was found at a garbage dump site, days after she went missing. Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of the innocent girl, which were held on Wednesday.

Kasur, on the other hand, is still mourning the loss of the girl. According to media reports, huge number of protesters blocked traffic at Steel Bagh and other entrance points of the city. Protesters raised slogans against Punjab government and the police. Residents are still protesting on Kali Pul Chowk, whereas the Ferozepur Road, linking Kasur to nearby towns and cities, remains blocked. Markets also remained closed in protest against the incident.

On Wednesday, protests erupted as people took to the streets, forcing closure of markets and setting many vehicles on fire. Two protesters were also killed during the clashes with the police. A group of protesters also stormed the office of deputy commissioner.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and has sought report from the inspector general Punjab police. Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa has strongly condemned the cold blooded murder of the minor girl and directed immediate all out support to civil administration for arresting the criminals and bringing them to exemplary justice.
