Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan's future lies in democracy and representative rule and parliament, judiciary and executive are on the same page to strengthen democratic institutions in the country. In a message to the nation on the Independence Day, Prime Minister Gilani said as the Pakistanis celebrate the day around the country with traditional zeal and zest, the country is up against multiple challenges.
Gilani said Pakistan has successfully taken on the challenge of terrorism and extremism under the present democratic government in line with its national interest and global commitments. The government, with the support of people of Pakistan, has made significant strides in fighting terrorism. Pakistani nation and its security forces have rendered huge sacrifices both in men and material to protect the national identity and preserve the sovereignty of Pakistan against all odds. He said Pakistan is passing through a "defining phase" with many positive developments in the country, with a potential of putting the polity back on track as envisaged by the founding father of the nation.
He also said it is a matter of immense pride that Pakistan came into being as a result of democratic, political and constitutional struggle. He said the 14th of August is an historic day when under the inspiring leadership of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Muslims of the sub-continent added a glorious chapter of sacrifice, commitment and selfless devotion to the annals of history. Prime Minister said the establishment of Pakistan is a culmination of the Muslims' relentless political and constitutional struggle to preserve their cultural identity, heritage, civilisation including protection of their political and economic rights. He observed that the tyrannical opposition of the Indian National Congress and the British could not deter the Muslims from realising the dream of Allama Dr Muhammad Iqbal of an independent state where they could live their life at individual and collective levels according to their traditions.
He said by the grace of God, Pakistan has a functioning democracy, independent judiciary, and a vocal parliament. Similarly, robust media, assertive civil society and enlightened middle class are the manifestation of a vibrant Pakistan. He pointed out that parliament approved historic constitutional amendments that have devolved the administrative and political power to the federating units.
