LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday sought a report from the Punjab cane commissioner regarding registration of cases against the sugar mills owners over their failure to comply with the court orders to make their mills operational till Dec 22.

Justice Muhammad Sajid Mehmood Sethi passed these orders while hearing a petition, filed by Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab Mian Maqsood Ahmad.

Earlier, Cane Commissioner Punjab Sana Ullah appeared before the court and submitted that in compliance of the court directions, show-cause notices had been issued to sugar mills owners who had not made their mills operational.

However, the court expressed annoyance and observed that it had ordered registration of cases against the sugar mills owners if they did not make their mills operational.

The court questioned that why the cases had not been registered against the mill owners.

The court ordered for immediate registration of cases against the mill owners and sought a report in this regard, while adjourning the matter till Dec 26.

The petitioner had submitted that under the law, sugar mills owners were bound to start crushing season in October, but despite passage of a period of two months, the sugar mills had not been made operational.

He said that sugarcane growers were facing losses due to delay in the start of crushing season.

He further submitted that due to failure in harvesting sugarcane on time, sowing of wheat would be delayed and it might cause food shortage and other problems in the upcoming months.
