Quetta receives 20mm rain

The metropolis of Balochistan received about 20 milimeters rain on Thursday and Friday. The rain started lashing Quetta City and outskirts after a rain system entered from Iranian side into Balochistan. Due to its sloppy floor, the city accumulates less rainwater and as a result, it draines out to Boryazid Khan seasonal river through Karanga seasonal nullah falling in Balili area of the city.
Presently, underground water table had lowered down to 1,000 to 1,200 ft deep causing drying up over 2,000 tube-wells in the city. Meanwhile, Geoscientist Razzaq Khan Khilji through a statement said underground water table of Quetta city could not be recharged from rainwater thanks to its cemented floor.
He, however, opposed delay action dams in surrounding mountains of the city including Koh Mehrdar, Koh Zarghoon, Koh Takato and Koh Chiltan as saying there were erected walls in front of narrow passages in the mountains, which only recharge underground water table of that specific land lying under the passage and not of the city.
He suggested that a three to four feet high wall should be erected in foot area of the all four surrounding mountains of the city so that rainwater could be accumulated there to recharge underground water table of the city. He said useless projects of delay action dams need funds in billions of rupees, of which a remarkable amount become prone to lion share. He opined that construction of cemented and stone wall in foot area of all four mountains around the city would maximum cast Rs 10 million.
