Former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has said that the former army chief, General (retd) Raheel Sharif influenced the government that helped him leave the country for medical treatment.
In an interview to Dunya News, the former military ruler thanked Gen Raheel Sharif, who has recently been replaced with Gen Qamar Bajwa as Pakistans Chief of Army Staff (COAS), for his help.
Musharraf said he had also served as the Army chief and as General (retd) Raheels boss. This is why he helped me, Musharraf said.
According to Musharraf, political cases were lodged against him and his name was placed in the exit control list (ECL). Sharif helped him leave the country by keeping the government from pressuring the courts, he added.
Well he (Raheel Sharif) did help me. I have been his boss and I have been the Army Chief before him. He helped out, because the cases are politicized, they put me on the Exit Control List, they turned it into a political issue," he said.
Musharraf said Raheel Sharif played a role in "releasing the pressure" on courts to prevent him from leaving the country.
"Once he (Sharif) got the government to relieve the pressure that they were exerting, the courts gave their judgment and allowed me to go abroad for treatment."
Musharraf is facing a number of high profile cases, including murder and high treason. He was indicted for treason last year over his imposition of emergency rule in 2007.
The former president had left the country for Dubai in March earlier this year after the interior ministry issued a notification to remove his name from the exit control list. The government notification followed the Supreme Courts order to lift the ban on his foreign travel.
