imageAre you under the impression that cornflakes are healthful and ideal for weight loss? If yes then it’s time to reconsider your thoughts. Corn flakes don’t aid in weight loss, instead they help in gaining extra kilos.

Cornflakes contain sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup. This kind of sugar is basically a simple carbohydrate that belongs to a class of chemically-related sweet-flavoured substances. Many people add sugar or honey to their cornflakes along with milk to add flavour. This only increases the sugar content of the cereal, putting you at a higher risk of gaining weight.

Actually, they are a refined carbohydrate. This means that the most nutritious part of the grain and its fiber has been removed. But, fiber is exactly what we should be adding to our diet! Because refined carbohydrates have had all of their vitamins and minerals removed, they are considered empty calories.

A study conducted by a health magazine of UK revealed that cornflakes cause obesity in kids. The study conducted on group of kids with low GI (glycemic index) breakfast like bran, porridge and soya and high GI breakfast like cornflakes, chocolate flavored cereal or white bread, found that high GI group were more likely to feel hungry between the meals and they also ate more for lunch.

High glycemic foods have been linked to obesity because the feeling of constant hunger leads to overeating. In addition to obesity, consuming refined carbohydrates has been connected to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

If you really enjoy your breakfast cereal then switch to wheat flakes or oatmeal for a healthier option.
