The US based ride hailing app, Uber is coming to Karachi on August 25, confirming previous reports that the transport giant is entering the Pakistani economic hub.
According to a report published in Dawn, the service will initially serve in the following areas: Clifton, Saddar Town, Jamshed Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, Malir Town and Korangi. For the first weekend, trips within Karachi will be free in celebration of Uber’s expansion, it added.
“Thousands of people have already downloaded the app in Karachi in anticipation. We like to say that cities choose us, instead of Uber choosing cities,” said Head of Pakistan Expansion Zohair Yousafi.
“The response has been incredible in Lahore, so we are extremely excited to be launching in Karachi. Anyone can now enjoy an affordable, reliable and safe ride at the push of a button thanks to uberGO. The competitive price means using uberGO is the perfect option for anyone wanting to get around the city,” Yousafi added.
Uber, founded by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp in 2009, entered Pakistan in early part of 2016, when it picked up Lahore in March to launch its services. Recently, Pakistan has witnessed a rise of local and international ride hailing apps, the Middle East based Careem is also operating here.
The transport giant, which was estimated to worth $62.5 billion by late 2015, also plans to expand its operation to Islamabad in the near future.
