imageLAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday summoned Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad for May 9 to explain reasons for not producing Federal Ombudsperson, Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace,Justice (R) Yasmin Abbasey, despite issuance of her non-bailable arrest warrants in a contempt petition.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah passed these orders while hearing a contempt petition filed by Salim Baig and Khurram Baig against the ombudsperson.

During the hearing, an Islamabad police DSP and a deputy attorney general appeared before the court and sought time for implementation of the court orders.

However, the court expressed displeasure on non- compliance of its orders and criticise police performance.

Amicus Curie, Member Pakistan Bar Council Azam Nazir Tarar, appealed the court for strict use of law in the matter to maintain the reputation of the court.

At this, the court summoned IGP Islamabad for May 9 to explain reasons for not producing the ombudsperson and adjourned further hearing.

It is pertinent to mention that the court issued non-bailable arrest warrants of the ombudsperson on February 12 after she failed to appear in a contempt petition despite being given an opportunity for the purpose and directed Islamabad police to ensure compliance of its orders.

The contempt petition was filed by Salim Baig and Khurram Baig submitting that the court stopped proceedings pending with Federal Ombudsperson against them on November 3. But the Ombudsperson violated the orders by continuing proceedings and issuing orders on November 6 despite communication of the court restraining orders, they added.

They contended that the Ombudsperson committed contempt of court and pleaded the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the respondent.
