KARACHI: The Diabetic Association of Pakistan (DAP) and WHO Collaborating Centre, Karachi have chalked out an elaborate programme to celebrate World Diabetes Day (WDD) here on Sunday.
Secretary General, Diabetic Association of Pakistan and Honorary President, International Diabetes Federation, Prof. A Samad Shera, sharing details of the day long WDD activities said it would comprise two sessions, focussed on specific target groups.
The first session in the morning was said to be scientific, meant for doctors during which experts will deliver state of art lectures on the treatment and prevention of diabetes and associated complication.
The afternoon session, to be chaired by former speaker of national assembly and DAP patron Illahi Buksh Soomro, will be for people with diabetes.
During the second session the participants will share their experiences and will also be provided with an opportunity to interact with senior physicians including diabetologists.
"Healthy Living and Diabetes" is the World Diabetes Day theme for 2014-2016, said Prof. Shera, the Honorary President of International Diabetes Federation.
The diabetologist mentioned that the WDD campaign is led by IDF, and its member associations, engaging millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.
WDD was said to have been created in 1991 by the IDF and WHO in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses.
"World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007 with the passage of UN resolution 61/225, said Prof. Shera.
He said the campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance related to diabetes and keeps diabetes in public spotlight.
