MOSCOW: The suicide bomber who killed 36 and wounded more than 150 at Russia's busiest airport was from the Northern Caucasus region of Ingushetia, the Interfax news agency reported Friday, citing a source.Citing preliminary information from "an informed source" in law enforcement agencies of the Northern Caucasus federal district, Interfax said authorities believed the 20-year-old bomber's name was Magomed Yevloyev.
The news agency said the authorities had collected DNA samples from Yevloyev's relatives living in the village of Ali-Yurt just outside the region's main city Nazran and sent them to Moscow for tests.Spokespeople for the regional branch of the FSB security service, interior ministry and investigators said they were unable to confirm the report when contacted by AFP.
Security officials have earlier said that the bombing attack had been carried out by a 20-year-old native from one of the North Caucasus republics, without being more specific The head of the Ali-Yurt village administration, Idris Ganishev, told Interfax that Yevloyev had indeed lived in the village before he left to look for work elsewhere Ganishev confirmed that his relatives still lived in the village and that representatives of special services had recently visited the Ali-Yurt, the news agency said.
The report comes after the Life News website this week published what it said was Magomed Yevloyev's picture and said his parents had not heard from him since he left for the nearby Krasnodar region last September.Officials said this week, citing the results of investigation, that the fragments of the bomber's body had contained a "huge amount of highly powerful drugs and psychotropic substances."He had joined one of the militants' gangs last August, they said.
