imageISLAMABAD: The Institute of Space Technology (IST) has introduced the latest and cost effective technology in composite manufacturing for quality engineering products, a good addition to engineering solutions to the present day's challenges.

As part of such efforts, the Institute held here an international workshop in collaboration with PUM, Netherlands to demonstrate and identify the affordable options for composite materials manufacturing.

These materials are based on Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM), Liquid Resin Infusion (LRI) and Sheet Molding Compound (SMC).

Twenty-three presentations were made during the workshop by the subject specialists from Netherland, Canada, United States, France and Pakistan.

About hundred participants from academic institutions, engineering industries, SMEs and R&D organizations actively participated in the workshop.

The workshop consisted of oral and video presentations, webinar and practical demonstrations about the latest state of the art in VARTM, LRI and SMC technologies for developing structural component.

Theoretical lectures were complimented with practical demonstrations about composites development methodologies. Other advanced topics about nanocomposites manufacturing, design of wind turbine blades and modelling and simulation of composites were also covered during the workshop.

The engineers, scientists and managers working in the fields of Mechanical, Automotive, Civil, Sports goods and General Engineering industries gained hands on practical experience.

The chief organizer of Workshop, Professor Zaffar M. Khan, Director General (Research, Innovation and Commercialization), a Fulbright Post Doc in composites, successfully implemented the project from conception to completion within three months in coordination with national and international organizations.

Engineer Van Voorst Bastiaan, a Senior member of PUM, was the principal speaker of the workshop.

He covered the vacuum assisted processes such as VARTM and LRI, both theoretically and practically. Professor Pascal Casari, Nintes University, France and Professor Curran Crawford, Victoria University, Canada delivered video presentations about the latest state of the art in composites design-for-manufacturing with practical applications in windmill blades.

The Webinar about modelling and simulation of composites was given by Engr Dustin Souza, e-Xstream Engineering, USA.

The certificates were awarded to the participants in an elegant and simple ceremony by Raja Amer Iqbal, Former Vice President, Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He congratulated the conference organizers for successfully holding the conference and assured full support of the chamber towards the needs based research addressing the contemporary and emerging technologies to make the Pakistani industry and SMEs more competitive in the global market.
