imageKARACHI: The Senate Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping has called for developing an action plan for ensuring the full utilisation of Korangi Fish Harbour according to EU standards in order to increase deep sea traffic for the exploitation of marine resources.

A meeting of the standing committee chaired by Senator Sardar Fateh Muhammad Hassini at the Korangi Fish Harbour reviewed the affairs of the harbour and suggested steps for making it fully operational.

Senators Nuzhat Sadiq, Shahi Syed, Saeedul Hassan Mandhokhail, Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Nasir, Babar Khan Ghauri, the ex-parliamentarian, the Secretary Ministry of Ports and Shipping, top officials of the government of Sindh, Marine Fisheries Department as well as the representatives of relevant industries and various fishermen societies attended the meeting.

The chairman of the standing committee said that it is terrible that the harbour is not fully operational for deep sea fishing. He added that the harbour's full utilisation will create employment opportunities, besides becoming a source of foreign exchange by seafood exports to the EU.

The committee expressed concern over incomplete board of directors of Korangi Fish Harbour. It directed that the board should be completed immediately. The committee also suggested that the Secretary Ministry of Ports and Shipping should be made its chairman.

The committee visited the facilities and supportive factories established in the premises of the harbour.

The committee recommended to the Federal and the provincial governments for the provision of basic amenities and security to industrialists. It also suggested steps against illegal landing sites in the Korangi creek, and for the removal of encroachments from the land of harbour.

It called for the Public Private Partnership to benefit from the expertise of private partners for an effective and efficient running of the harbour.
