NEW YORK: US stocks ended higher Thursday after a morning slump, with Nasdaq tech stocks outperforming while the Dow's blue chips gave a feeble showing.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 10.37 points (0.08 percent) at 12,405.03 in closing trade.

The broader S&P 500 added 5.45 (0.41 percent) at 1,325.92, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 21.54 points (0.78 percent) at 2,782.92.

The market shrugged off dull economic data to score modest gains fairly evenly across the board.

Microsoft jumped 2.3 percent to $24.75 after hedge fund investor David Einhorn called for the company's board to get rid of chief executive Steve Ballmer.

That was taken as a push for the software giant to do something to boost its share price, which has done little in the past two years.
