US stocks open mixed

Published Updated

new_york_stock_exchangeNEW YORK: US stocks opened mixed Wednesday as retail giant Target reported better than expected earnings but said consumers are still cautious in their shopping.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 12.95 points (0.10 percent) at 12,466.63 in the first minutes of trade.

The broader S&P 500 lost 1.10 (0.08 percent) to 1,327.88, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 0.98 point (0.04 percent) to 2,784.19.

Target brought mixed news on consumers. The big-box store operator beat expectations with a 2.7-percent rise in net earnings in the first quarter, helped by strong returns in its credit card business.

But chief executive Gregg Steinhafel said retail sales had been weaker than expected.

"Our guests remain cautious in their spending," he said.
