imageWASHINGTON: US telecom giant AT&T said Monday it would buy wireless carrier Nextel Mexico for $1.88 billion, in the second acquisition in three months in Mexico.

The move furthers AT&T's efforts to create "the first-ever North American mobile service area covering over 400 million consumers and businesses in Mexico and the United States," AT&T said in a statement.

The deal follows one announced in November in which AT&T revealed plans to buy Mexican wireless operator Iusacell for $2.5 billion.

Nextel Mexico, whose US parent company NII Holdings has been in bankruptcy protection, has some three million customers.

"Combining Nextel Mexico with Iusacell will allow AT&T to more quickly improve and expand its mobile Internet service to the benefit of millions of Mexicans, particularly those who live outside major metropolitan areas, than it could otherwise do without the transaction," AT&T said in a statement.

The transaction is subject to a bankruptcy auction and regulatory approval.
