 KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Thursday chaired a meeting to review the law and order situation in the province particularly in Karachi at Chief Minister House here.

Speaking on the occasion, he stressed upon police, rangers and other law enforcing agencies to maintain the law and order, and have constant vigilance on the activities of criminals, terrorists, dacoits and anti-state elements, said a statement.

He said that prompt measures and action initiated against terrorists, extortionists, killers, criminals, dacoits be further accelerated and peaceful atmosphere be ensured.

He stressed the need of coordinated efforts among all departments and agencies engaged in law enforcement so as to get rid of menace of target killing.

The Sindh CM stressed need to evolve prompt measures for curbing the activities of criminals.

He also appreciated the performance of police, rangers and law enforcement agencies.

Inspect General of Police Sindh, Fayaz Leghari in his presentation informed that the over all law and order situation in the city has been normalized after surge of target killings in March 2011 due to joint efforts of law enforcing agencies and pro-active policing.

He said that in month of March, 65-target killing cases were registered while only 15-cases of target killings have been reported in April.

He said that with the assistance of other LEAs, have arrested 10 notorious killers who are involved in score of target killing cases.

He added that the police taking serious notice of complaints of extortion from traders and businessmen, arrested seve accursed during last two days, who have confessed involvement in a number of cases, while joint pickets have been established in all affected markets and commercial areas of Saddar and City Town so as to arrange the sense of insecurity.

The IG Police Sindh added that Sindh Poilce launched an extensive operation against dacoits/ kidnappers in districts of Ghotki, Kashmore, Qambar, Larkana, Shikarpur, Khairpur, Thatta, Sanghar, Hyderabad and Tando Allahayar.

In 228 encounter 59 gang of criminals/dacoits and kidnappers were busted, he added.

He further said that the police were able to safely recover, 66 kidnapers including nine persons abducted from the area of Punjab Province, Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan districts, and during the operation nine kidnappers were killed and 28 were arrested.

Besides, three notified dacoits carrying money Rs 1.5 million were killed and 13 notified dacoits carrying head money of Rs 7 million lacs were also apprehended.

Regarding performance of police for the year March 1 to April 12, 2011, Fayaz Leghari informed the meeting that 34 hardened criminals involved in Highway dacoity / robbery and other heinous crime were killed and 445 were arrested.

He added that during the said police operation, seven policemen scarified their lives and 10 were injured. IG Sindh Police informed the meeting that nine police personnel were martyred, six were injured, 98 gangs were busted, 42 dacoits were killed, 1182 dacoits/criminals were arrested, 245 proclaimed offenders were arrested, 2940 absconders have been arrested and 10 patharidars were arrested.

He said that 106 strong police-rangers pickets have been established in the affected areas and mobile/motorcycle patrolling has been enhanced.

Besides, snap checking is being enhanced, block raids are being conducted and collaboration with law enforcing agencies and security arrangement has been enhanced.

He added that special investigation teams have been formed, SIU, AVCC, ACLC and Zonal Investigation branches have been tasked to arrest criminals involved in target killings.

He said the intelligence agencies have been contacted for assistance in detention/arrest of criminals.

With regards to extortion in 2011, the I.G. Police Sindh informed that in Karachi 51-cases were reported, out of which 25-cases were detected and 41-accused were arrested.

The meeting was attended among others by Director General Rangers Sindh, Maj. General M.Aijaz Chudhary, CCPO Karachi, Saud Mirza, Secretary to Chief Minsiter Sindh, Alamddin Bullo, AIG Special Branch, DIGs of Karachi and officers of various agencies.
